Casa Manzoni is a historic building in Milan, located in Via Morone, right in the centre of the city, a few steps from the Teatro alla Scala and very close to your luxury b & b.
Manzoni returned to Milan in 1810, after five years in Paris, together with his wife Enrichetta Blondel and his mother Giulia Beccaria. After three years living elsewhere, he bought a new house in Via Morone, and he moved there shortly after doing renovations and modernization (including the reconstruction of the façade on Piazza Belgioioso).
The current appearance of the building is due to the work of Architect Boni who, after Manzoni’s requests, and also as an homage to the post-unitary climate of that period, adopted a neo-Renaissance style. In particular, the façade, inspired by the Lombard architecture of the Renaissance, is composed of elaborate terracotta decorations. Considering the whole work, the balcony and the wonderful portal stand out and are immediately visible.
Until few years ago, Casa Manzoni was hosting the National Manzoni Studies Center. Inside you can still visit well-preserved rooms including the study - where the table on which "I Promessi Sposi" was composed is still standing. You will also have a chance to admire a rich library and Alessandro Manzoni bedroom.
The palace hosted several important meetings and illustrious personalities as Cavour, Garibaldi and Verdi who came to pay tribute to the writer.
The building was renovated several times over time, the last time on the occasion of Expo 2015, to offer the public a larger exhibition path transforming Casa Manzoni into a more lively cultural hub. Wandering through the quiet rooms you can breathe the serenity that allowed the great writer to find the concentration necessary to compose his important works.
At the end of the visit you can rest in your luxury b & b, very close to the Manzoni house.
