Arco della Pace

Arco della Pace, at the northern entrance to Parco Sempione, is a backdrop of the life that takes place in the homonymous district and pedestrian area characterized by several elegant palaces. The construction is inspired by the structure of the Arch of Septimius Severus in Rome: it has three arches, bounded by four massive Corinthian columns, decorated with allegorical bas-reliefs and episodes of the Restoration. Designed in honor of Napoleon Bonaparte, it was built in 1807 on a design by Luigi Cagnola. The construction was interrupted after the defeat of Waterloo, to be finally finished under Francis I of Austria's (who entitled it to Peace) reign.

The arch was made using Baveno granite and Creole d'Ossola marble. Together with the two tollhouses located at its sides, it forms the Porta Sempione, one of the 5 oldest doors in Milan. On the top of the monument a group of bronze statues, representing "La sestiga della Pace", stands accompanied by four victories on horseback, while on the front are depicted the personifications of the rivers Po, Ticino, Adda and Tagliamento.

On the upper part it's easy to read the inscribed names of the fallen during World War II. Two commemorative plates, on both sides of the arch, bear the names of the fallen during the First World War.

The Arch, symbol of neoclassical elegance in Milan, is a totally open to the public: you can visit it without any impediment and admire in all its majesty. Arco della Pace can be reached during daylight hours by getting off at the Cadorna stop of the green or red metro line and then proceeding with a walk through Parco Sempione. The sunny days are perfect for visiting the impressive monument, but it is also nice to spend an evening in this area: it's so nice to sit, enjoy and listen to live street musicians or admire artists performances.
